Best Luxury Makeup - Makeup Worth the Splurge in 2018

Hi, friends! Happy New Year! Hope you had a great holiday season and are ready for an amazing 2019!

Today’s post is super exciting as I will be rounding up the best luxury makeup of 2018!

I’ve mentioned many amazing products throughout the year in my Monthly Favorites posts, but today’s post will be about only the very best!

I went a little crazy with all of the Sephora sales during 2018, so I tried out a ton of makeup.

Some were great and some weren’t as great, but overall, 2018 was a very good makeup year for me!

Just as I do with my monthly favorites posts, I’ll be focusing of the products that I’ve tried within the year, even if it was released prior to 2018.

And at the very end, I’ll quickly mention a few of my favorite products from last year that I still use all the time.

After trying out TONS of makeup in 2018, these products are definitely the best luxury makeup to splurge on! Totally worth the splurge and you won’t regret buying any of these high-end makeup products.

*Products will be organized by brand, alphabetically, for ease of reading.

Also, check out the best drugstore makeup of 2018!

So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Anastasia Beverly Hills

Brow Definer

First seen in: March Favorites

Before starting to use the Anastasia Brow Definer early last year, I was a long-time user of the Perfect Brow Pencil (also by ABH). And while I still like that pencil, I was just itching to try out something new!

And I haven’t gone back since. The thick angled tip took some getting used to, but now I can’t live without it. It really speeds up the process of filling in my brows and it makes it super easy to create hair-like strokes.

The formula of the pencil is on the soft side, which allows you to create natural-looking brows. No one wants a pencil that’s too waxy and mats your eyebrow hair down.

Hoola Matte Bronzer

First seen in: July Favorites

2018 was definitely the year of trying out new things and the pale girl that I used to be now loves bronzer!

I tried out tons of bronzers last year and the Benefit Hoola Bronzer is totally one of the bronzers I reach for the most.

This bronzer blends out so effortlessly and it’s the perfect shade to create a healthy sun-kissed bronze on my skin tone. I struggle with bronzers being too warm on me (especially since I’m pale AF everywhere else LOL), but this one is perfect.

Side note: It lasts forever! I got a trial size in one of my Sephora orders in the middle of the year, and it looks like I’ve barely used it! And I’ve used it a lot.

Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil

First seen in: November Favorites

I’m an avid user of cleansing oils for removing my makeup and after using the Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil for over a year, it was time for something new.

I love this cleansing oil. It has more of a gel-like consistency than other oil cleansers, which feels really soothing on the skin. It gets rid of all my makeup effortlessly and leaves my skin feeling super moisturized.

I just bought this recently, but I will definitely repurchase when I’m done with this bottle!

Cover FX

Dewy Setting Spray

First seen in: July Favorites

The Cover FX Dewy Setting Spray is on my list because of its amazing mister! The nozzle creates such a fine mist that every other setting spray nozzle feels like I’m being sprayed in the face with a water hose LOL.

As a long-time user of the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, I will say that I don’t see a big difference in my makeup when using either of the two. The Cover FX Spray is totally just as good when it comes keeping my makeup in place and extending the longevity of it.

As far as it being a dewy finish, I don’t agree. It’s definitely not matte, but it’s not dewy. I would call it a natural finish.

Backstage Face & Body Foundation

First seen in: September Favorites

The Dior Backstage Foundation is the perfect foundation if you want a “my skin but better” finish. It has medium coverage and is super lightweight and long-wearing.

This foundation is one of one a few that are currently in my go-to rotation because I love how flawless the finish is. I could use more coverage and I use a lot of product to build up to full coverage, but I swear my skin looks like porcelain with this foundation on.

It’s so easy to build up coverage without it looking cakey or you can really sheer it out for that “no-makeup makeup” look. So versatile!

Drunk Elephant

C-Firma Day Serum and TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

First seen in: May Favorites

I’m writing about these two products together because they have both completely transformed the texture of my skin.

I used to have a lot of tiny white heads that weren’t really pimples and I don’t think they were milia either because I was able to squeeze them out fairly easily. And they would come out in little hard while balls. Sorry if that’s too much information LOL.

Since using the C-Firma in the morning and the TLC Framboos, those tiny white heads have practically disappeared. And the texture of my skin is so much smoother. I still get acne, but it’s just the normal hormonal kind.

Both serums are really expensive, but when I don’t use them even for a day, I can really tell the difference in my skin. These are must-haves in my skin care routine.

Fenty Beauty

Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil

This was my first highlighter from Fenty Beauty and my goodness, what a great first impression!

This is more of a glitter than a regular highlighter because there isn’t really any pigment in it – just pure, beautiful glitter. Because of this, I like to use it on top of another highlighter when I really want an extra pop.

Since there is no pigment in it, if worn alone, it can work on every single skin tone. And it’ll give you a glossy, sparkly glow.

Normally with glitters, the formula can be chunky and can emphasize texture, but not this one! The glitter is so finely milled that you can’t even feel it.

The only downside is that it gets dirty if you don’t use a super clean brush every time. :(

Ambient Lighting Edit Volume 4

First seen in: November Favorites

I finally splurged on this palette after lusting over the Hourglass Ambient palettes since forever ago. And I will say… WORTH. EVERY. PENNY.

Every single powder in the palette seriously gives you the most beautiful lit-from-within look, without going overboard. It’s pretty subtle. But beautiful. Like you’re a glowing goddess.

I literally cover my entire face with the top row of powders for an all-over glow. I take a fluffy brush and run it across all three shades (even the highlighter) and apply it all over my face. Extra AF, maybe, but I LIVE for dat glo.

Huda Beauty

The Overachiever High Coverage Concealer

First seen in: November Favorites

Girl. If you’re looking for a super full coverage concealer, this is your answer.

This is the most full coverage concealer that I have ever tried and it’s amazing. I have really dark under-eye circles that even Tarte Shape Tape doesn’t cover up completely. But this concealer. IT DOES.

The consistency is on the thick side, so I definitely recommend setting it quickly before it starts creasing.  But, after setting it in place, it’s not going anywhere!

And the packaging is absolutely horrid. I hate that zamac tip because it gets so messy. I’ll deal with it because the product is so good.

It does oxidize a smidge, so keep that in mind when choosing your shade. I have the shade Marshmallow which is the second to the lightest shade, and I could probably use the lightest shade. After it oxidizes, Marshmallow is about the same shade as my skin, so  don’t get any highlighting effect from it.

The Sculpting Contour Powder in Light

First seen in: May Favorites

Since getting this contour powder in May, it’s the only contour powder I’ve used. It’s that good. Definitely one of my holy grail products.

Contour is definitely one of the more difficult things in makeup to figure out. Even after figuring out how to contour, it can be hard to find the right shade that doesn’t look too orange or too dirty on the skin.

Well, guys, I found it. If you are also pretty fair like I am, you’re going to love the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder. It’s a cool-toned shade, which is perfect for creating a contour that actually looks like a shadow would look like, if a shadow was actually there.

You want to cut those cheekbones without it looking like you have a brown line across your cheek when being looked at from the side. And this contour powder will help you do that.

Kevyn Aucoin is not the cheapest brand, but this little guy will last you forever! I started using it back in May and I’ve barely made a dent in it. Totally worth the cost.

Laura Mercier

Blush Colour Infusion in Rose

First seen in: November Favorites

Prediction for 2019: You will be seeing a lot more blush on this blog. Blush has never been a product that I need to have many of – once I find one I like, I tend to just use that one over and over. But, recently, I’ve really been interested in trying out different blush shades.

And this is the blush that started it all. I tend to gravitate toward peach-toned blushes, and while the Laura Mercier Blush in Rose is still kind of peachy, it’s definitely more pink than I would normally wear. But, I’m so glad I tried it.

Trying out a new blush shade made me realize how much of a difference it makes in your overall look and now, I want all the blush shades.

This blush in this particular shade was the perfect fall blush for me as it’s a little deeper than I usually wear and the formula is amazing. It’s so easy to blend out which allows you to sheer out or build up color to suit your preference.

Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Bronze 03

First seen in: August Favorites

Even after months of owning this, I still don’t know what ‘matte radiance’ means… isn’t that an oxymoron? LOL but regardless of what it’s called, it’s an amazing bronzer.

It has a hint of shimmer in it, which gives a nice radiant sun-kissed glow. If you’re looking for a natural bronzer, this is the one. Upon first application, it gives you a healthy-looking glow – maybe similar to spending a few hours in the sun. But of course, if you’re looking for a heavier bronze, this powder is very easy to build up.

Translucent Loose Setting Powder Glow

First seen in: September Favorites

Out of all the products on this list (and even on my drugstore list), the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder Glow might just be my most favorite product of the year. It’s definitely at least in the top 5.

I’ve always struggled with keeping my skin looking radiant after setting my foundation with loose powder because powder is so dry. I always set my entire face with loose powder to lock in my foundation, so inevitably, my skin looks much more matte after setting powder than it did before.

This setting powder changed my life. I’ve been a long-time user of the normal Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, but with the added micro reflective particles in the glow version, it’s everything.

It still does everything the normal Laura Mercier powder does, like setting your foundation in place and keeping it there all day, but the glow version leaves a really subtle glow all over. This powder totally solved my problem of looking too matte.

Dual Finish Multi-Tasking Illuminating Highlighter in Dazzling Bronze

(used as a bronzer topper)

First seen in: October Favorites

This Lancome highlighter in Dazzling Bronze has recently become my go-to highlighter for a new makeup trick I’ve been doing. Just from reading this post, I think you can tell that I’m really into having a radiant/glowy finish to my makeup.

One of the best tricks to do that is to apply a bronze highlighter lightly on top of your bronzer. It’s gorgeous! This is one of my must-do steps in my routine now. I especially love doing this on my bronzer that I applied on my forehead and temples.

Of course, I don’t apply it with my usual highlighting brush. That would be a much too concentrated amount. I actually use the same fluffy brush I use for bronzer to lightly sweep on highlighter over the bronzer.

Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Oh, Darling

First seen in: November Favorites

Do you see how gorgeous that is? This highlighter is one of those that makes you have heart eyes as soon as you open it. It’s so pretty that it hurt to use it for the first time LOL.

But, destroying was totally worth it. I’ll admit that it didn’t totally blow my mind during the first use, but one I got that initial top layer off, it became everything I dreamed it would be.

It gives you the most beautiful metallic wet-looking finish and is the perfect light gold shade for light to medium skin tones.

Marc Jacobs

Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter

First seen in: September Favorites

When I’m feeling really boujee, I’ll mix this into my foundation for an extra amount of glow. On other days, I’ll use a less expensive option LOL.

But really, this gel highlighter totally lives up to the hype surrounding it. It gives you a gorgeous golden glow and that totally comes through when mixed into foundation.

If you don’t set your face with loose powder, this would be beautiful to use on your cheekbones. Or if you don’t wear foundation, you can totally use this on bare skin.

Or you can use it before loose powder, even though the powder will really make it lose its sheen… Just don’t use it on top of powder. It doesn’t work that well.

Others have raved about it for highlighting their body, like on the collarbone and shoulders. But, I’m not a fan of putting product on my body because it gets on my clothes, so I haven’t tried that out. It looks beautiful when others do it, though!

O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan in Tan-Tastic

First seen in: May Favorites

Even though I have a few bronzers on this list, the Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronzer in Tan-Tastic is probably the one that takes the cake out of all of them.

This shade is said to be a universal shade that everyone can use. And while I’m not so sure about that claim, it’s definitely the perfect shade for me.

It’s more cool-toned than most bronzers out there, but that’s what makes it so good. Because that’s what makes it look so natural. The formula is like butter and blends out seamlessly, but I mean, would we really expect anything less from Marc Jacobs?

It’s a pretty pricey bronzer, but you get 0.8 ounces (25 g) of product in the pan, which means it’ll last you forever. Plus, it’s so pretty.

O!Mega Glaze All-Over Foil Illuminator in Gilty

First seen in: November Favorites

This is another highlighter that will make you have heart eyes as soon as you open it. Can we talk about the packaging?! Everything about it just screams luxe. And that pan size – you’ll never run out.

It totally lives up to its name of Foil Illuminator because damn, it’s reflective. It’s a beautiful golden peach shade that would be perfect on medium to dark skin tones.

I will admit that it’s a little too dark for me, but idgaf and I still use it because it’s that stunning. I can live with a slight cast on my cheekbones when looking at my face straight-on for a gorgeous pop of gold on my cheekbones when looking at my face from the side.

Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation

First seen in: March Favorites

This foundation is totally my go-to holy grail foundation of the year. I’m already almost through with my second bottle, and that’s a lot considering how many different foundations I’ve tried this year!

The finish of the foundation is just perfect for me – radiant but not dewy. And it’s full-coverage AF, which I love.

On an everyday basis, when I’m not testing out a new foundation, this is the one I will reach for over and over again.

Orgasm Afterglow Lip Balm

First seen in: July Favorites

If you take a look around this blog, you’ll see that I don’t talk about lip products that much. And that’s because I don’t wear lipstick on a daily basis. I just can’t deal with the hassle of reapplying it throughout the day LOL.

But, the NARS Orgasm Lip Balm – this is totally my kind of lip product. It’s so easy to apply and you don’t need to line your lips first. It’s really comfortable to wear and it has just the right amount of color and shine to enhance my natural lip color.

The Silk Canvas Protective Primer

First seen in: April Favorites

I’ve been in love with the Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer since the first day I used it! I’m normally not a huge fan of smoothing primers because I feel like foundation slides around too much on them. But not this one!

You can actually see your skin being smoothed out when you apply this primer – it’s almost like putting a filter on your face.

It’s not a moisturizing primer and since I have fairly dry skin, I still use a moisturizing primer on top of the Silk Canvas Primer.

Things I'm Still Using from Last Year:

Some things are just way too good to stop using! Even with the crazy amount of makeup I’ve tried in 2018, I’m still constantly using these tried-and-trues from 2017.

Bobbi Brown

Vitamin Enriched Face Base

First seen in: May 2017 Favorites (my first ever favorites post!)

And this is the primer that I use on top of the Tatcha Silk Canvas! I’ve been using this primer almost every day for over 2 years and I don’t think I’ll ever stop. Totally one of my holy grails.

It’s super moisturizing and just makes my skin feel so good! It makes it really feel like it’s ready to be slathered with all the cake that’s to come LOL. But really, it does an amazing job of prepping the skin to create an ideal surface for foundation to lay on.

Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick

First seen in: September 2017 Favorites

Can you believe I’m still using my first stick of the Vanish Stick since getting it last September?!

This foundation is definitely one of those that I always felt like I wanted to “save” because it’s so good and expensive LOL.

I’ve been using it a lot recently and I’m still amazed at how good my skin looks every single time I wear it. It really makes your skin look seamless. Totally going to purchase another one after I finish this one!

Jaclyn Hill Palette

First seen in: October 2017 Favorites

The Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette is one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes EVER. This is one of my go-to everyday palettes because there are just so many different shades in it! I mean, look at how beat up my palette is - you can tell I’ve used it a ton!

You can do so many different looks with just this palette – from natural to bold, and you’ll never need to seek out other colors from different palettes. Definitely a one-stop palette. Hands-down, a holy grail for me.

I always struggle with categorizing Morphe into either affordable or luxury. Some of the brand’s products are definitely priced like drugstore products! But, since the Jaclyn Hill Palette is priced more than the average drugstore palette, I decided to include it in the luxury list.

Rodeo Drive Highlighter

First seen in: End-of-Year 2017 Favorites

Out of ALL the highlighters that I’ve tried, this is the one that I would consider my most favorite.

I’ve used this highlighter so much that you can see the pan! It’s really hard for me to hit pan on a highlighter because I’m constantly buying new ones. So, just by looking at that, you know it’s one of my all-time favorites.

The formula is just so silky smooth, and it creates such a beautiful champagne gold sheen on your skin. The powder is really finely milled, and it doesn’t have any chunky glitter in it, so no emphasizing texture.

Shape Tape Concealer

First seen in: November 2017 Favorites

I’ve tried a lot of concealers since first trying the Tarte Shape Tape and I would still consider it my holy grail concealer. I use it every day and it does the best job of covering up my dark under-eye circles.

It is on the thicker side and is definitely not for those that wear light makeup, but it covers everything up!

Urban Decay

All Nighter Setting Spray

First seen in: End-of-Year 2017 Favorites

Another product that I would consider a holy grail! And I think a large part of the makeup community can say the same, right?

Just like concealers, I’ve tried a lot of setting sprays in 2018. And while all of them were good, I still have a stash of the All Nighter Setting Spray because I know I’ll always go back to it.

It honestly does the best job of locking your makeup into place and keeping it there all day (and night)!
