Now that I’m almost 27, I’ve been thinking more and more about the health of my skin.

My skin was never that bad, but it was also never great - and I want it to be great.

I’d love to have super healthy-looking skin as I get older and I know that in order to do that, taking care of my skin while I’m still young is super important!

I found a routine that really works for me and I think would also work for a lot of people. It’s simple, affordable, and effective! Can you even ask for more?

So today, I will be sharing with you…

my easy night-time 5-step Korean skincare routine!

I chose to go with a Korean skincare routine because let’s be honest – Koreans are known to have amazing skin!

Korean beauty products, especially Korean skincare products, are highly regarded in the beauty industry to be both innovative and effective. So, why not use the best of the best?!

Without further ado, let’s get started!

Most of the products that I use are from the brand COSRX. They’re an extremely popular Korean skincare brand, have great reviews and the best thing of all is that their products are affordable!

They are definitely one of the best brands to check out if you are a Korean skincare beginner (or even if you’re not!). COSRX just makes great products, period.

Step 1 and 2: Cleansing

Cleansing the skin of all the dirt and grime that have accumulated throughout the day should be the first step in any skin care routine.

I adopt the two-step cleansing method, starting first with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based foam cleanser.

Step 1: Oil Cleanser

Why an oil cleanser?

I start with an oil-based cleanser to clean out oil-based impurities such as sebum, sunscreen and makeup. (Liana’s note: he doesn’t wear makeup, but I sure do, and I agree that an oil-based cleanser is the way to go to remove makeup.)

It’s important to cleanse your face from these impurities as they have the potential to clog up your pores, which can lead to breakouts.

What product do I use?

I use the Clean it Zero Cleansing Balm - Original by BANILA CO. This award-winning cleanser uses bamboo extract to soothe the skin and Vitamin C-rich acerola extract to help brighten up the skin.

When I was looking around for what oil-based cleanser to buy, everyone was raving about this product and it definitely does not disappoint!

What is the product like?

The product comes with a spatula, making it easy to scoop out the product. The product is kind of a solid, sherbert-like texture that melts into an oil type cleanser as you rub it into your skin.

How do I use it?

I usually scoop out about a dime-sized amount with the spatula and then put it onto my palm. Then I rub my palms together to melt the product before applying it to my face.

I gently massage the product all over my face, spending a bit of extra time on my nose and chin as these are the areas where I generally break-out.

I then add a little bit of warm water (warm so it is more gentle on the skin!) to emulsify the cleanser into a smooth foam and massage my face for about 30 seconds.

Then, I wash it off with warm water, and give my face a few dabs with a face towel to dry it off. Do NOT rub your face with the towel to dry it as this can irritate the skin.

Sometimes, as I’m massaging the cleanser on my face, I can feel some of the dirt and grime coming out from my skin.

It’s great to feel that my skin is getting cleansed but it also makes me realise just how clogged up your pores can get!

Step 2: Water cleanser

The second step of the two-step cleanse is the water-based foam cleanser.

Why a water cleanser?

Just as the oil-based cleanser cleans out oil-based impurities, water-based cleansers cleans out water-based impurities such as sweat and dirt.

What products(s) do I use?

For this step, I alternate between two COSRX products:

Why these products?

I generally use the Low-pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser as it is more gentle on the skin. Your skin is generally at a pH level of 5.5, so a low-pH cleanser is great for a gentle cleanse without stripping the skin of its natural oils. This product has a pH level of 5.

Once or twice a week, or if I feel like my face is especially dirty that day, I’ll use the Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser.

I wanted a product with Salicylic Acid in it for those times when I want a deeper cleanse. Salicylic Acid is great exfoliating ingredient and penetrates deep into your pores to unclog them.

This product has a pH level of about 9 – 9.5. As it’s a pretty alkaline cleanser, you can definitely feel that this product strips some moisture from your face. This is why I don’t use this product every day.

How I use it:

To apply both of these products, I squeeze out about a dime-sized amount onto my palm, add a bit of warm water, rub my hands to emulsify and foam up the product and then gently massage into my face.

Again, I spend a bit of extra time around my nose and chin area. Then I rinse off with warm water and use my face towel to dry my face by patting it down.

Step 2.5: Exfoliator

Why do I exfoliate?

I have quite a bit of blackheads on my nose and sometimes get breakouts on my cheeks and chin.

So, a couple of times a week after cleansing, I’ll use an exfoliator to more aggressively penetrate the pores to clear them out.

What product do I use?

I use the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, which is a chemical exfoliant.

How I use it:

The directions on the bottle says to use a cotton pad, but I feel like you waste too much product when you do that.

So, what I do is use one pump of the product and kind of gently apply it to one side of my face. I make sure not to rub it in – I just want to lay the product down onto my skin first.

Then, I use another pump and do the same thing on the other side of my face. After that, I use my fingers to gently spread the product evenly around my entire face.

After even spreading the product all over my face, I use my fingers to pat the product into my face to absorb the product into my skin.

I like to pat the product in as there is less friction between my fingers and my face, creating less chances for pulling or dragging which could irritate the skin.

After I’ve patted the product into my face, I leave it on for about 20 – 30 minutes to let it work its magic and then move on to the next step.

Since I’ve begun using this product, I’ve found that I have less breakouts and when I do, they’re a lot more manageable.

I also feel like it’s great to do this at least once a week just to make sure that you get a deep cleanse every once in a while.

Step 3: Toner

What does toner do?

The toner is used to help bring some hydration back into the skin and get its pH level back to its ideal level of 5.5.

What product do I use?

I use the COSRX Natural BHA Skin Returning A-Sol.

This product is a hydrating and mildly exfoliating toner that controls breakouts and alleviates the appearance of existing acne.

How I use it:

I usually use about one to one and a half pumps of this and spread it around my face. Then, I pat it into my skin to help the product absorb better.

There is alcohol in this product, though, so if you have dry skin or are sensitive to alcohol, this product might not be for you.

However, the presence of alcohol in the product helps the product to dry quickly, making it faster to move on to the next step of the routine.

Step 4: Essence

What the hell is Essence?!

This is where the magic happens! The previous steps have been focused on cleansing the skin, whereas in this step, we add nutrients back into our skin to brighten and tighten things up!

What product do I use?

I’m currently using the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. You can probably guess from the name of the product that this essence is snail mucin, or snail slime, based.

Snail slime?! WHY?!

I know it sounds kind of gross to put snail slime on your face, but it is actually really powerful in its healing properties.

It’s effective at a whole bunch of things, including repairing damaged skin, improving skin elasticity, and it’s ultra-hydrating.

I LOVE this product. It makes my skin feel so supple and hydrated. The texture of the product is kind of gooey and really does make you think of snail slime – true to its name!

How I use it:

I apply about one to two pumps of the product, making sure to gently pat it into my face to help with absorption.

Step 5: Moisturiser

Of course we have to moisturise, right?!

The last step of my routine is all about adding more moisture back into my skin.

What product do I use?

I'm on the snail mucin train, so I use the COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream as my moisturiser which, you guessed it, is also snail mucin based.

This product leaves my face feeling so soft, nourished and hydrated – especially after applying the essence.

How I use it:

I use about a dime-sized amount of product, spread it all over my face and gently pat it in until fully absorbed.

When I wake up in the morning, my face always feels so soft. I absolutely love this product.

And that’s it for my night-time 5-step Korean skincare routine! I hope it helped you out in some way or form. Aren’t you dying to try some Korean skincare products now?!

I’ll definitely be adding more steps in the future as I find myself wanting to get into serums, eye creams and masks to really get my whole face looking and feeling healthy and hydrated.

What products are you using in your skincare routine? Are you already using Korean skincare products?

Do you have any recommendations for things that I should try out? Let me know down in the comments!
