Hi, friends! It’s almost Christmas yayyy! Have all of you finished your Christmas shopping yet? I sure did a lot of Christmas shopping so far...for myself. The deals during this time of the year are just too good to resist! Lotssss of makeup was bought.
For today’s post, let’s talk about Laura Mercier’s newest foundation – the Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation. Laura Mercier has never done me wrong, so I was super excited to try out this foundation!
Details from lauramercier.com:
A 15-hour long wearing, oil-free liquid foundation with a matte finish and weightless medium to full coverage.
All the wear, all the coverage, without the weight. Laura’s longest wearing foundation of flawless full coverage and 15 hours of wear fused into one weightless formula.
High-performance wear that’s sweat, humidity, water and transfer resistant. Colour stays true all day and won’t oxidize. Coated pigments glide on to create buildable medium to full colour that beautifully evens out skin tone and minimizes the look of pores and imperfections.
Controls oil immediately and throughout the day. Matte finish is never dull, flat or cakey. Weightless texture looks, fits and feels like a second skin. Skin-fusion technology provides ultimate longwear with comfortable, breathable ease.
Medium to Full weightless coverage.
Ideal for all skin types, especially normal to oily.
Oil-free. Fragrance-free. Non-comedogenic. Dermatologist-tested.
1 oz./29 mL
The foundation comes in a nice rectangular glass bottle with a brushed finish. The cover has a zebra print on it and I gotta be real with you guys, I think it is so weird. I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure nothing else in their collection is zebra themed, so isn’t it super random?!
I think it would’ve looked much better if the cover was a solid color, like the rest of their products. It’s totally irrelevant to the functionality of the packaging, though, so it’s all good.
The bottle comes with a pump dispenser – great, I hate having to pour out the foundation. But, I hate this pump.
The pump squirts out the foundation with quite a lot of force so it’s best to push down on the pump slowly – not a huge deal but it can be easy to splatter on things if you’re not careful.
The hole of the pump is tiny and gets blocked pretty easily, so it needs to be cleared with a needle or something fairly frequently. That’s also not a huge deal, just kind of annoying.
The consistency is more of a mousse-like texture rather than a liquid. If you are familiar with the L'oreal Infallible Pro-Matte foundation, I’d say it’s similar to that, but a little lighter – more moussey.
It’s not as liquid-y as the Fenty foundation, the Dior Diorskin Forever Perfect foundation, the Marc Jacobs Remarcable foundation, and definitely thicker than the NARS All Day Luminous foundation. (Just to name some popular foundations for reference.)
And even though it’s not liquid-y, I want to emphasize that it’s not thick either, it’s kind of airy feeling. It’s kind of between a liquid and a mousse? Because it’s not really a mousse. Okay, I’ll stop. Haha, hopefully from the photo and my bad description, you all can get an idea of what I’m trying to say!
I usually start off with pumping out about 5 pumps of foundation onto the back of my hand. With a dense kabuki flat-top brush (Morphe Y-6), I dip into the foundation then dot it onto half of my face.
This foundation dries pretty quickly (learned my lesson the first time I applied it), so I blend out half of my face first, then dot the other half of my face, and blend that out. This foundation blends out really nicely for the first layer. And the first layer only.
That might sound really weird, but let me try to explain. I start off with a hefty amount of product because I try to build it up to full-coverage the first time around – which means a lot of dabbing and stippling motions, making sure not to disperse the product too much.
I do this because I’ve found that because the foundation dries so quickly, it can be difficult to put another layer on top of it without breaking up the existing foundation on your face.
I feel like I probably end up using more foundation than I actually need to with this method, but when I start off with just a little amount, I end up totally ruining my foundation if I try to add more. This totally shows in seeing that I’ve used up half the bottle in 3 weeks.
I would definitely consider this medium to full coverage, just as the description claims. When starting off with the amount of product as I do, I would consider it a full-coverage foundation.
But, if you start off with a normal amount (maybe 3 pumps), I’d say it’s more of a medium coverage foundation because I would definitely be able to see some of my dark spots and discoloration under my eyes peeking through.
The finish is pretty damn matte. I wouldn’t say it’s super matte, where it looks like there is no life left in my face, but it’s pretty close. Even though it’s a matte finish, I never feel like it looks cakey, even after wearing it the whole day.
This foundation can be dry to some, especially those with really dry skin. I have fairly dry skin, but I use a really hydrating primer (Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base), to offset the matte-ness.
Just as it claims in its name, it does give a pretty flawless finish. It’s not going to make everything disappear, but it does do a great job in evening out skin tone and minimizing the appearance of pores and imperfections.
This foundation really is lightweight! It seems like the close to mousse-like texture makes it feel really light-weight. Even though it’s super lightweight, it doesn’t feel bare-faced – it definitely still feels like I’m wearing makeup.
But, what I love about it is that throughout the day, it doesn’t start to feel heavier. You know how sometimes at the end of the day, you feel like you REALLY need to take your makeup off to let your skin breathe? Yeah, I never get that feeling with this foundation.
There is a really odd thing about this foundation that I’d like to touch upon. On my left cheek, near my smile line area, this foundation will not stick to my skin! I’ve never had a problem with that area with any of my other foundations, so it’s really strange!
I don’t know what it is because I don’t have a dry spot there and even if I did, foundation normally emphasizes texture in dry spots, but with this spot, it just totally won’t stay! I haven’t figured out what is causing it, but if I do, I will be sure to edit this section!
When wearing it to work, it always looks great and feels great at the end of the day – 10 hours after I first applied it.
I haven’t tested the 15-hour wear claim yet (that’s a really long time!), but if I do, I’ll be sure to update this section.
The longest amount of time I’ve worn it is about 13 hours and judging from how it looks at 13 hours, I doubt it’ll look good at 15 hours.
After about 8 hours of wear is when I need to do my first nose blot. That’s pretty damn good if you ask me! And it’s always only my nose, which is where I’ll get oily first.
I think around the 12 hour mark is when I really start to notice it starting to break apart around my nose and mouth.
I do prime and set my face (with both powder and spray), which would normally extend the longevity of any foundation, so that might play a part in why it lasts as long as it does on me.
Is it worth the cost?
In my opinion, $48 is a pretty fair price for 1 oz. of foundation from Laura Mercier. I would consider Laura Mercier mid-range regarding price points (definitely not in the Kevin Aucoin or Tom Ford tier), and $48 is in line with the cost of their other products.
It performs as well as you’d expect a Laura Mercier product, so I can’t really be mad about the price. You’re paying for all the fluffy extras like the packaging, the scent, the name, etc., but that’s all to be expected.
However, it may be just in my experience, but 1 oz. of product doesn’t seem like it will go very far. I’ve already gone through half of the bottle, and have only been using the foundation for 3 weeks.
With that being said, I don’t think I will personally buy this foundation again, for that reason alone. The foundation is great, but I can get other great foundations for the same price or less, that will last me longer.
I’d give this foundation a 4/5. I'm taking 0.5 points off because of that weird thing it did on my cheek. I don’t have that problem with any other foundation, so I know it has to be something in this foundation causing it.
I'm taking another 0.5 points off because of the trouble I have layering it. But other than those two things, this foundation is great! The coverage is good, you can definitely achieve full-coverage by applying more product, or keep it as more of a natural look with just a light layer.
It’s really long-wearing, it’s lightweight, and it feels great throughout the entire day – it's almost everything I look for in a foundation.
And that’s it for this post, guys! If you have tried this foundation, I’d really love to hear what you think of it. Even though this foundation worked great for me, I don’t think this is my “holy grail” foundation. What’s your “holy grail” foundation? I would love to know!
