I've been using Laura Mercier's Hydrating Foundation Primer for about two weeks, so here is my review!
I first bought this primer because I ran out of Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base and I wasn't going to spend ¥11,000 to replace it while in Japan.
It's sold for so much more than it does in the States! Crazy.
I absolutely love Laura Mercier's Translucent Setting Powder, have only had good experiences with Laura Mercier products, and was looking for a primer that is very hydrating, so I thought this product may be a satisfactory replacement.
The description on the Laura Mercier website reads:
Moisture-rich primer nourishes, soothes, and conditions skin as it creates a smooth surface for flawless makeup application. The formula provides a soft-focus effect to help minimize the look of pores, fine lines, and imperfections.
Laura created this expert Hydrating primer specifically for dry, dehydrated skin. Lightweight, creamy formula creates a protective moisture buffer, with an enhanced antioxidant vitamin "cocktail" that helps protect skin against harmful, aging effects of the environment.
The primer comes in a rectangular, pewter box with the brand name, product name, and product size on the front.
On the back of the box is the product description and directions for use:
The product description reads:
Foundation Primer - Hydrating created the perfect canvas for makeup application fro dehydrated skin. This nourishing, lightweight water based gel forms and even, invisible layer that acts as a bugger to outside elements, expertly holding foundation for longer wear and keeping cosmetics from being absorbed into the skin. Visibly skin smoothing, vitamin enriched Foundation Primer - Hydrating works well with all skin types.
The directions for use reads:
Smooth on Foundation Primer - Hydrating by gently massaging over skin's surface. Can be applied over moisturizer on onto clean skin before Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Foundation or Concealer.
On one side of the box is the ingredient list:
The product comes in a tube with a twist-off cap. This is personally my favorite way of packaging a primer because the product comes out so easily and you don't have to use a spatula or your finger to get a product out of a jar. It's the most hygienic way! You may not be able to get all of the product out when you get towards the end, but that isn't a big deal to me. Just squeeze that tube hard to get all of it out!
The front of the tube is like an exact replica of the front of the box, and the same goes for the back of the tube:
To me, this product has very little scent to it. Some customers on Sephora have mentioned somewhat of a strange smell, but I don't think that it has one at all. If anything, there may be a bit of a plastic smell, but it's so faint that it doesn't bother me.
I don't think any superfluous scent additives have been added, so this product may be really good for those who have skin sensitive to scented products.
The texture is actually more watery than I expected, especially after using Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base, which is more cream-like, but this primer is more lotion-like. Although it's described as a gel, this product feels very similar to the type of consistency a regular hand lotion would have.
I normally apply about a dime-sized amount onto my fingertips and then spread it evenly all over my face. It applies smoothly and is very lightweight. However, maybe because it's water-based, it takes longer than I would like to fully absorb into my skin. But, it does leave your skin feeling refreshed and moisturized.
After the product fully absorbs into my skin, I apply my foundation as I normally would. On the first day I used this primer, I noticed I needed more foundation to cover my face than I have been using for the past few months, with my previous primer.
I thought maybe it was just a bad skin day and shrugged it off. However, after two weeks, I noticed that I'm regularly using more foundation than I used to.
My foundation applies very smoothly with this primer, but it doesn't fill in and smooth out fine lines and creases, as much as I would like.
And I'm not talking about creasing that happens throughout the day, I notice more fine lines showing as soon as I apply my foundation, than I did before. It's not too bad though, I'm just really nitpicky about this in particular.
Although this is a hydrating primer, it is awesome when it comes to controlling oil and getting shiny throughout the day. Even after a few hours, my foundation looks as if I just applied it.
Any longer than a few hours, though, I definitely have to touch up my foundation. But, I haven't encountered any primer that I don't have to do that with. It can't work miracles, right?
As for creasing throughout the day, not including the fine lines that I mentioned earlier, this product doesn't make me crease any more or less than I did before using it. However, I did notice that creasing starts earlier in the day. It doesn't get worse than it did before, it just starts earlier.
Believe it or not, I don't think this primer is hydrating enough for me. As soon as I switched to this primer from Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base, I immediately noticed my skin was drier. It's still hydrating and my skin isn't dry, but I would prefer a more moisturizing product.
Overall, I'd give Laura Mercier's Hydration Foundation Primer a 3.5/5 because of the fine lines and creasing, as well as it not being hydrating enough for me. I still think it's a good product, though, and will definitely continue using it.
P.S. If you like what I do here on lianadesu, it would mean so much to me if you bought me a coffee (support my blog)!
